It is found naturally in animal-derived foods such as meat, shellfish, and dairy, and in legumes, seeds, and whole grains, and is added to some fortified foods. Zinc is an essential trace mineral found naturally in animal-derived foods — meat, shellfish, dairy — and in legumes, seeds, and whole grains, and added to some fortified foods. It is required for the normal function of numerous enzymes, for normal immune system function, for normal growth and wound healing, and for the normal structure and function of skin.
Because the body does not store large amounts of zinc, status depends on regular dietary intake. Absorption can be reduced by phytates in plant foods (which bind zinc) and by certain health conditions or medications. Long-term high-dose zinc can interfere with copper absorption and lead to copper deficiency, which can affect blood cell formation and nerve function. This is one reason chronic high-dose zinc supplementation is not advisable without medical guidance.

- Certain antibiotics (quinolones and tetracyclines)
- Zinc can bind to some antibiotics and reduce their absorption. Spacing zinc two hours before or after these antibiotics is commonly advised; check with a pharmacist for your specific medication.
- Diuretics (thiazides)
