Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
The form most commonly used in supplements, typically produced from lanolin (a wool-derived wax) or, in vegan products, from lichen. Compare the declared dose per serving, not the source claim.
Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)

Lanolin-derived vs lichen (vegan)

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so the body stores it. At typical supplemental amounts it is generally well tolerated, but very high intakes over time can lead to toxicity (hypercalcaemia), which can damage the kidneys and other tissues.

The tolerable upper intake level for adults is 4,000 IU (100 μg)/day. Toxicity is almost always from high-dose supplements, not from food or sunlight.

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, orlistat and conditions that cause fat malabsorption can reduce its absorption. A clinically appropriate form and timing may be advised.
Certain cholesterol and seizure medications
