Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria — a group of photosynthetic microorganisms sometimes called blue-green algae — that is commonly sold as a dietary supplement. The name refers to the organism’s spiral-shaped structure. Two products can both say “spirulina” and differ in every detail that matters. Some products reference “organic” certification or a named cultivation source; those are label attributes to compare only where they are actually documented, not automatic proof of superior quality.

Chlorella is a single-celled green alga with a cell wall, while spirulina is a filamentous cyanobacterium. They are not interchangeable, and this hub does not claim that one is superior to the other. 2026 umbrella review of meta-analyses of randomized trials
A 2026 umbrella review (Algal Research, 2026;95:104571) synthesized 12 meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials of spirulina supplementation in humans and reported signals across outcomes including lipid measures, blood-pressure measures, and body-composition measures. The review noted that results varied by outcome and that the underlying evidence base had important variation in preparation, dose, duration, population, and study quality. This is a synthesis of pooled trial data, not a treatment recommendation, and it does not establish that spirulina prevents or treats cardiovascular disease, obesity, hypertension, or any other condition.
2026 systematic review/meta-analysis on C-reactive protein
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis (Int J Vitam Nutr Res, 2026;96(1):44330; PMID 41873104) pooled 8 randomized clinical trials of spirulina, with doses ranging from 1–8 g/day and intervention durations of 3–16 weeks, and reported a modest pooled reduction in serum C-reactive protein (CRP). Changes in TNF-alpha and IL-6 were not statistically significant, and statistical heterogeneity across the included trials was significant. CRP, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 are inflammatory biomarkers; a biomarker change is not proof of a clinical treatment effect, and this finding does not establish that spirulina treats, prevents, or cures any inflammatory condition.
Lipid-related measures
