Genus, species, and strain
Probiotic microorganisms are identified at three levels: genus (e.g. Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium), species (e.g. Lactobacillus rhamnosus), and strain (a specific designation, often a letter/number code such as GG). The strain is the most specific level, and studied effects are typically tied to a strain rather than to the species or genus alone. CFU (colony-forming units)
