Trust & methodology
How HerbParlor Evaluates Herbs, Botanicals & Supplements
Wellness content has a credibility problem. HerbParlor's answer is a process — visible, repeatable, and the same for every herb and every product. This page documents that process in one place: what we evaluate, how product information is assessed, how VitaScore™ and VitaValue™ work, how evidence and testing are handled, and where the methodology stops.
VitaScore™ is HerbParlor's structured product-assessment score. It evaluates product transparency, documentation, quality verification, source provenance, evidence linkage, and standardized product value using information we can verify. It is not a measure of medical effectiveness, safety, or suitability for an individual.
Scope
What HerbParlor evaluates
HerbParlor evaluates product information — how clearly and verifiably a herb, botanical, or supplement is documented — not medical outcomes. The platform works across three kinds of records:
- Herb & botanical profiles — traditional context, source-linked evidence, and safety information where available. Browse the herb profiles or the ingredient glossary.
- Supplement products — structured Supplement Facts information (form, serving size, declared amounts), testing and certification information, source provenance, and standardized value. Browse supplements or compare them in the comparison view.
- Evidence & source records — government, regulatory, certification-body, and publication sources that describe ingredients and labeling conventions in general terms, not any specific product.
Throughout, research is distinguished from claims, and traditional use adds context — it never substitutes for evidence.
Assessment
How product information is assessed
Every product is worked through the same fields in the same order. The practical, step-by-step framework is documented in How to Compare Supplements. In summary, assessment moves through:
- Product identity — product, ingredient, ingredient form, and dosage form.
- Serving size — how many units the listed amounts refer to.
- Declared amount — the relevant active amount, not the compound mass or carrier.
- Formulation — the named chemical form or blend of forms, treated as identity, not as a quality verdict.
- Facts vs claims — manufacturer information, retailer information, claims, and independent verification kept distinct.
- Documentation & transparency — how clearly the product is documented and what (if anything) is independently verified.
- Standardized cost — price compared on a meaningful normalized quantity, not bottle price alone.
Interactive tools apply these same checks to a label you provide: Transparency Checker, Testing Checker, and Evidence Checker.
VitaScore™ · Methodology v2.0
VitaScore™ — the product-assessment score
VitaScore™ is HerbParlor's structured product-assessment score. It evaluates product transparency, documentation, quality verification, source provenance, evidence linkage, and standardized product value using information we can verify. The current methodology version is v2.0; every score result carries this version so older scores remain interpretable.
A numerical score is produced only when the minimum-data threshold is met. At least 6 of the eight dimensions must be calculable, and all critical identity/formulation fields must be present: brand, name, dosageForm, ingredientAmounts, servingSize. Below that threshold the result status is insufficient_data with a null score and the reason: Insufficient verified product data.
VitaScore™ · Dimensions & weights
The eight scored dimensions
The score is built from eight weighted dimensions. Weights are expressed as a percent of the total and sum to 100; the engine normalizes to the actual sum.
1. Label transparency
15% weightWhether the product provides a clear, structured ingredient list with amounts, serving size, and container information — without relying on opaque proprietary blends.
2. Dose transparency
15% weightWhether the product clearly states amount per serving, unit, serving size, and relevant ingredient quantity. This measures transparency of dosage information, not clinical adequacy.
3. Ingredient / form specificity
10% weightWhether the ingredient form is clearly identified in the structured product data (e.g. magnesium glycinate, creatine monohydrate, a specified botanical extract).
4. Quality verification
20% weightDocumented quality / testing information already present in the structured data, distinguishing independent verification from manufacturer-supported information and retailer/brand claims.
5. Source / provenance quality
10% weightThe quality of the underlying source records backing the product facts — distinguishing manufacturer, retailer, certification-body, and evidence/publication sources. Brand popularity is never used as a proxy.
6. Product / manufacturer transparency
10% weightAvailability and clarity of manufacturer / brand information, product identity, description, source information, and verification dates. Brand popularity is never rewarded.
7. Evidence linkage
10% weightWhether the product's ingredient information can be meaningfully connected to existing evidence references already stored in the data model. This is NOT medical efficacy and never invents studies or searches the internet.
8. Standardized value
10% weightReuses the existing VitaValue™ standardized-cost result where it is actually available. Value is never recalculated independently by the VitaScore engine, and low price is never turned into a high-quality claim.
VitaScore™ · Verification ceiling
Verification states & missing-data handling
A configurable score ceiling caps the raw weighted score based on the actual verification and status signals in the structured data — not merely on whether a field exists. The engine selects the first matching state in order:
| Verification state | Score ceiling | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Strong Independent Verification | Independent third-party testing is recorded, the product record is verified, and assessment coverage is high. The raw weighted score is not capped below 100. | |
| Mostly Documented | The product record is verified and linked sources are verified, but no independent testing is recorded. The score is capped to reflect limited verification gaps. | |
| Material Verification Gaps | The record is partially verified, testing is represented only by brand/retailer/manufacturer claims, or linked sources are not all verified. The score is capped accordingly. | |
| Significant Missing Information | The record is pending or unverified, or assessment coverage is at the minimum threshold with no verification signals. The score is capped to reflect significant missing information. | |
| Insufficient Data | The minimum-data threshold is not met. No numerical score is produced; the result reports insufficient verified product data instead. |
When data is insufficient, no numerical score is invented. The result reportsinsufficient_data(or needs_review where applicable) and surfaces exactly which fields are missing, so the gap is visible rather than hidden behind a number.
VitaScore™ · Boundaries
What VitaScore™ does NOT measure
VitaScore™ is explicitly a structured product-assessment score, and explicitly not:
- medical efficacy;
- safety;
- suitability for any individual;
- a treatment recommendation.
A higher VitaScore™ reflects more complete, better-documented, and better-verified product information — not a medical verdict. It is never modified by marketing language, and low price is never turned into a high-quality claim.
VitaValue™
Standardized value comparisons
VitaValue™ measures standardized product cost / value only. It is not a measure of effectiveness, safety, or quality. Conceptually:
total standardized quantity in container = normalized amount per serving × servings per container; cost per target unit = product price ÷ (total quantity ÷ target amount).
A VitaValue is calculated only when a verified price, a currency, a positive servings-per-container figure, and a derivable normalized comparable quantity are all available. Otherwise an honest status is returned — unavailable or needs_review. No value is ever estimated.
The standardized quantity is category-specific — for example, elemental magnesium, actual creatine where explicitly declared, and combined EPA + DHA. Normalized-cost comparisons in the comparison view are presented only when products share the same normalization target, so cross-category figures are never falsely compared. A lower standardized cost means a product delivers the relevant active amount at a lower price per normalized unit — nothing more.
Evidence
Evidence & source provenance
HerbParlor distinguishes research from claims and rates evidence on a plain, three-tier scale:
- StrongConsistent support across multiple studies or reviews.
- ModerateSome supportive evidence, but with limitations in size, design, or consistency.
- EmergingPromising early or traditional use; supportive data still thin. We say so plainly.
Source provenance is assessed from source type and verification status — manufacturer, retailer, certification-body, and evidence/publication sources are kept distinct. Brand popularity is never used as a proxy for quality. Evidence linkage assesses whether a product's ingredient information can be meaningfully connected to existing evidence references already stored in the data model; it never invents studies and never searches the internet.

References
Methodology references
The methodological principles above are informed by a small set of authoritative, independently maintained references already held in HerbParlor's provenance catalogue. They inform how labeling conventions, dietary-supplement information, independent verification, and botanical identity are handled — for example, that Supplement Facts amounts are declared per serving and by identified form, what third-party verification of a dietary supplement means, and why accepted botanical naming is kept distinct from clinical efficacy.
These references do not endorse HerbParlor, VitaScore™, VitaValue™, or any product ranking, and no external source validates HerbParlor's proprietary scoring methodology. A listing here is a provenance pointer, not an endorsement.

Verification
Testing vs certification
A claim and a verification are not the same thing. “Third-party tested” printed on a label or store page is not automatically treated as independently verified. HerbParlor records testing and certification statements as attributed claims and marks a product independently verified only when the supporting certification-body or testing evidence warrants it.
Testing summaries distinguish four statuses, kept separate so that “unknown” is never converted into a failure:
- Verified — independent third-party testing reported.
- Partially verified — a named lab without a third-party flag, or certifications present, but no third-party testing.
- Not publicly verified — only brand or retailer claims are recorded.
- Unavailable — nothing is recorded.
For the practical guide to reading verification evidence, see How to Verify Third-Party Testing and run a label through the Testing Checker.
Safety
Safety, surfaced first
Safety information is surfaced where it is available, never overstated where it is not. HerbParlor's safety checklist:
- Known drug–herb interactions noted where available
- Pregnancy, nursing, and condition considerations noted where available
- Serving and preparation information listed where available
- Testing information included in product comparisons
This is informational, not medical advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
Independence
Affiliate neutrality & no sponsored rankings
HerbParlor sells nothing and takes no placement fees. Scores cannot be bought, influenced, or negotiated. Where merchant offers or affiliate tracking links are present, they connect a product to a retailer — they never alter a VitaScore™, a VitaValue™, a comparison, or a ranking. Product assessment and commercial listings are kept separate by design.
The same rubric is applied to every product, regardless of whether an offer exists. A product with no merchant offer is assessed identically to one with several.
Honesty
Methodology limitations
HerbParlor is transparent about what its methodology cannot do:
- It assesses documented product information, not medical effectiveness, safety, or suitability for any individual.
- It depends on the information that is actually available. When data is missing or unverified, the result says so rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
- Evidence linkage reflects reference availability in the data model — it does not state or imply that a specific product has been clinically proven effective.
- Standardized value is a cost calculation. A lower standardized cost says nothing about how well a product is documented or verified.
- Traditional use adds context; it never substitutes for evidence.
Information is updated as the project develops. The methodology version on each score result lets you interpret older scores against the rubric in effect when they were produced.
