- The label names a specific chemical form of creatine — creatine combined with one molecule of water (the “monohydrate”). The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies creatine monohydrate as the most commonly used and most studied form of creatine in dietary supplements. The name describes the compound and its form, not a quantity or an outcome.
- What the name does not establish
- The name alone does not state how much creatine a serving delivers, how the product was tested, or what effect it will have. Because the monohydrate compound includes bound water, the mass of “creatine monohydrate” and the mass of actual “creatine” inside it are not the same number — so the form name by itself does not give you the comparable quantity.

- Creatine compound amount — the mass of the named compound per serving (for example “creatine monohydrate 3.4 g”). This is the compound mass, not necessarily the actual creatine mass.
- Actual creatine amount — where the label provides it, the mass of creatine itself per serving (often phrased “of which creatine …”). This is the number to use for comparison.
- Serving size — how many grams of powder or how many capsules the listed amounts refer to.
- Servings per container — how many servings the package holds, which sets the total creatine in the container.
- Other ingredients — anything else in the formulation, including flavourings, binders, or capsule materials.
The key habit is to keep the form and the disclosed amountseparate. A label that names “creatine monohydrate” tells you the form; the numbers next to it tell you the quantity. Where a label does not provide enough information to separate the compound mass from the actual creatine mass, the honest response is to say so — not to invent a conversion.

The dosage form — powder or capsules — is a separate attribute from the underlying creatine form. A powder serving is measured in grams (usually one scoop), while a capsule serving is measured in a number of capsules, and the same actual creatine amount can be delivered either way. How to compare creatine products

A fair comparison puts the form alongside the other facts a label and a product record can document, rather than treating the form as the whole story.
