Elemental magnesium is the actual mass of magnesium a serving delivers — the mineral itself, separate from whatever compound carries it. The compound weight is the total mass of the magnesium-containing substance in a serving — for example, “500 mg magnesium glycinate.” The elemental magnesium is only the magnesium portion of that compound. Because the companion molecule (glycinate, citrate, oxide, and so on) contributes its own mass, the compound weight is always larger than the elemental magnesium it contains.

Different magnesium compounds carry different fractions of magnesium by weight. That means 1,000 mg of one magnesium compound and 1,000 mg of another can provide quite different amounts of elemental magnesium. To compare magnesium products honestly, read the Supplement Facts panel rather than the front-of-bottle marketing. Work through these fields in order:

  1. Serving size — how many tablets, capsules, or grams the listed amounts refer to (one tablet, two capsules, one scoop).
  2. Magnesium form — the named compound or blend of contributing forms, such as magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate.
  3. Amount of elemental magnesium per serving — the figure declared in the Supplement Facts panel, which is the actual magnesium the serving delivers.
  4. Number of servings — how many servings the container holds, which sets the total elemental magnesium in the package.
  5. What the stated amount refers to — confirm whether the number is the elemental magnesium (as the Supplement Facts panel declares) or merely the compound weight. If a label lists the compound mass without a separate elemental figure, treat it as needing review rather than assuming it equals elemental magnesium.

When all five fields are present and clear, you have everything you need to compare two products on equal terms. When a field is missing or ambiguous, the honest response is to flag the gap — not to fill it with a guess.

Why labels mislead

Why two products can list different compound weights

Because each magnesium compound carries a different fraction of magnesium by weight, two products can list very different compound weights while providing different amounts of elemental magnesium — and the relationship is not always intuitive. The form name alone never settles the comparison either. Two products with the same form name can still differ in elemental magnesium per serving, serving size, and servings per container.
