Creatine is a compound made in the body and obtained from food, and creatine monohydrate is the most commonly used and most studied form in dietary supplements. The basics
What does “per serving” mean?
The serving size on the label is the reference quantity that every disclosed ingredient amount refers to. When a panel says “creatine monohydrate 3.4 g,” that 3.4 g is the amount in one serving — not in the whole container, and not necessarily in one scoop unless the serving size is defined as one scoop of a stated mass.
Serving sizes are not standardized across products. A powder serving might be 3 g, 3.4 g, or 5 g; a capsule serving might be one capsule or six. Two products can therefore list the same form and still represent meaningfully different amounts per serving — and the same amount per serving can be packaged into a different number of servings per container.
This is why “per serving” is the right place to start reading, but not the right place to stop. The disclosed amount only becomes comparable once it is read alongside the serving size, the servings per container, and — where the label provides it — the actual creatine amount rather than the compound mass.

- Serving size — the amount (grams of powder or a number of capsules) that all listed amounts refer to.
- Servings per container — how many of those servings the package holds in total.
- Creatine ingredient / form — the named compound, such as “creatine monohydrate.”
- Disclosed amount per serving — the mass declared next to the form, which may be the compound mass, the actual creatine mass, or both.
- Other ingredients — anything else in the formulation, including flavourings, binders, or capsule materials, where relevant.
Read these fields as a set of related facts, not as a single headline number. The disclosed amount only means what it appears to mean once you know which serving size it refers to and which quantity (compound or actual creatine) is being stated.
Keep them separate

The form — for example “creatine monohydrate” — identifies the specific compound the product contains. The disclosed amount tells you how much of that compound (or how much actual creatine) is represented in one serving. These are two different pieces of information, and confusing them is the most common label-reading mistake.
Because creatine monohydrate includes bound water, the mass of the compound and the mass of the actual creatine inside it are not the same number. A serving that lists 3.4 g of creatine monohydrate does not contain 3.4 g of creatine — it contains somewhat less actual creatine, with the rest of the compound mass being the water bound into the monohydrate form. Where a label provides both, the actual creatine amount is the comparable number.

Be honest about gaps
What missing information means
Labels do not always state everything you would want for comparison, and the honest response to a gap is to recognize it — not to fill it in. Three gaps come up often with creatine labels:
- Missing serving size — without a serving size, the disclosed amount cannot be interpreted reliably, because you do not know what quantity of product the amount refers to.
- Missing creatine amount — if the label names the form but states no amount, the disclosed creatine quantity is unavailable, not zero.
- Missing actual-creatine amount — if only the compound mass is stated and the actual creatine mass is not, the comparable quantity cannot be derived without inventing a conversion.
Missing information is not automatically proof of a problem. This calculation is only valid when both values are actually provided on the label. If either the per-serving amount or the servings-per-container figure is missing, the total cannot be calculated honestly — and no total should be invented.
This is a quantity-structure calculation only. It describes how much creatine a package represents in total; it is not intake or dosing advice, and it does not tell you how much creatine any person should consume.
Avoid these
Common label-reading mistakes
- Confusing serving size with amount of creatine. “3.4 g” as a serving size is not the same as “3.4 g creatine” — the serving size is the mass of powder, while the creatine amount is declared separately on the panel.
- Confusing the form name with quantity. “Creatine monohydrate” names the compound; it says nothing about how much is in a serving until you read the amount next to it.
